Roman Vishniac's A Vanished World is an extraordinary record of the lives of German and Eastern European Jews in the years immediately preceding the Holocaust. Vishniac, a Russian Jew, began to take photographs of village life during World War I, when Russian Jews who lived near the front were accused of being German spies and were deported to Siberia. Beautiful black & white photographs of German and Eastern European Jews in the years immediately preceding the Holocaust. Roman Vishniac, a Russian Jew, started taking photographs of village life during World War I. Vishniac's photographs, only a small fraction of the 16,000 he took, show us the faces of people soon to die, a world that has vanished. His photographs are beautiful, and haunting. Book is in very good condition with some shelf wear, bumping to the edges. There is a personal inscription on the inside of the front cover and the price on the back cover is crossed out with pen. The pages are clean and binding tight.
