Backstrip sunned and has a few waterspots. Contents sound and clean. No jacket. An English portrait painter of the rich and famous. He spent a few years working as an artist in Australia and, more briefly, in New Zealsnd followed several years in South Africa Including the Boer War.

(London: Hutchinson, 1931). Medium 8vo; original red cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; no dustwrapper; pp. 287, incl. index; colour frontis. and several other plates, some of which in colour. Backstrip slightly sunned. Remarkably clean and bright internally. Very good condition. Phillip Tennyson Cole (1862-1939) was "a painter of genre, interiors and portraits ... His sitters included Cecil John Rhodes, Lord Milner and the Duke of Norfolk. 1897 a founder member of the SA Society of Artists. 1900 accompanied Dr Carel Peters on an expedition up to the Zambezi. Lived in London and Cape Town ... Travelled widely in Australia and New Zealand." - Grania Ogilvie: The Dictionary of South African Painters and Sculptors. Tennyson Cole's recollections include much on the society figures he painted. .
