The Clark Lectures, 1963: Spenser and Bunyan; The Romantics; The Victorians; The Contemporary World: Poetry and Drama; The Contemporary World: Prose Narrative. Louis MacNeice delivered these Clark Lectures in the spring of 1963, a few months before his death. They are printed here with no more than the necessary minimum editorial revision. A short bibliography has been added.

The book is composed of lectures delivered by MacNeice, lightly edited, and published here soon after his death. A bright, fresh copy, with the dust jacket now preserved in a clear, removable archival protector.
