London: Printed by W. Bowyer, 1748 Book. Very Good. Half leather. [ii], iv, 60, 57-100; 28, 25-54; 28, 30*-31*, 29-53, [9] pages. Pagination erratic but matches the description in ESTC T77481. On ESTC the prelims are described as being iv [i.e. vi]. With 11 plates including the frontispiece and folding plan. The two plates of coins are numbered page 29* and 32*, but ar enot included in the pagination on ESTC, so I have included them in the plates. In 19th century half leather which is worn, head of spine is torn. Rough pencil outline plan of the town attached to the rear of the frontisipiece. Occasional pencil notes and occasional spotting..

Spotting and staining to the end papers and to pages at the start and finish also, including the title page. Brief ink note to the front free end paper naming the editor [ Rev Tho Monro ] and some of the contributors. In old marbled paper boards with narrow leather spine and leather corner tips - leather very worn and joints split, lettering label damaged and spine chipped..

This is a scarce, antique copy of "Taintor's Route and City Guides" - this particular guide is for the "Pennsylvania Coal Regions via Morris & Essex R.R." Published in 1867 by Taintor Brothers in New York. The guide features 4 color maps; the "Map of the Anthracite Coal Regions of Pennsylvania with Connecting Railways" is larger and folds out. "With sketches of the cities, villages, stations, scenery, and objects of interest along the route." There are illustrated advertisements at both the front and back. Please see the photos for the complete list of contents.Condition:The pages are in great condition - mostly clean and white with no writing and only some very sparse light foxing; tiny tear at the outer edge of page 29. The fold-out map is clean and firmly attached. The covers are present, but have detached from the spine and are separated along the right edge of the spine; creases at the left-hand corners of the front cover; there are a few tiny stain spots on the back cover.

ESTC T131824 where it states that the work is mainly attributed to - Crotus Rubianus and Ulrich von Hutten, possibly in collaboration with Hermann von dem Busche. Title pages included in the pagination for vol 2 and also for Epistola Magistri Benedicti Passavantii. In old full leather binding - the boards would once have had arms in gilt - but these have been erased. The lettering piece to the spine has gone. Occasional light browning and spotting ot pages. Tear to the fore edge of pages [iii]/[iv] with an old paper repair - this affects a few words. Ink name and inscription to the title page for vol 2. Pencil owner's name to a front free end paper - RA Linscott Paris 1927. Ink note in French also..

(2)p. manuscript letter measuring approx. 8" x 10 ½", folded, signed and dated January 14, 1867, Coast Survey Office, to Charles Lanman in regards to information pertaining to Prof. A.D. Bache. Mr. Hilgard was born in Germany. He settled with his parents in Illinois. Studied engineering in Philadelphia. He entered the Coast Survey in 1845. He was in charge of the Coast Survey under the Superintendent from 1862 until 1875. Throughout the American Civil War he served the Union Army and Navy by the construction of maps and charts and by surveys as well as by tidal and other information. During the failing health of Professor Bache, Hilgard, who was at that time in charge of the Coast Survey office, was obliged to perform the duties of Superintendent, which he did without extra compensation. He was Commissioner of the Committee of International Standards (seeking uniformity of weights and measures).
