Sobre este artículo
[LGBTQ Literature] Marchal, Lucie. Virgilia Peterson (translator). The Mesh. London: William Heinemann, LTD, 1951. First Edition First Printing Hardcover with no Dust Jacket. First translation of the French novel of the same title and same year. Plot follows two women falling in love in France and their descent into the "twilight world" of lesbian love. One of few lesbian novels at the time written by a woman, providing an authenticity to the text. The novel gained critical acclaim and won the Les Lettres Francaises prize for the Best French Novel of the Year in 1951. The Saturday Review called the novel: "a work of sensitivity, candor and psychological probing...written in the great realistic tradition of Stendhal and Balzac." At the time of its release, the book was contested by the Censorship Board of Ireland which prohibited all English language editions of The Mesh from 15 June 1951. One of few lesbian novels to also portray a "pro-lesbian" ending. Featured in Grier at the highest tier for having significant lesbian characters and action. Cover of orange boards and gilt lettering. Pages are clean and textblock is tight. Small dime-sized sticker on spine. Overall, in very good condition.
