The first, second, and third series published in 1859, 1860, and 1863. 3 volumes (vi, 437 p.; [2], 438 p.; xix, [1], 444 p.); 20 cm. Bound by Bayntun of Bath, Eng. Three-quarter crimson morocco; red cloth over boards. Six spine compartments between raised bands. Gilt-tooled title in second compartment of each volume; gilt-tooled author and series number in fourth compartment of each volume. Gilt-tooled decoration in remaining compartments with year of publication at tail. Top page edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Binder's stamp on front free endpaper: Bayntun Binder, Bath, Eng. Front fixed endpaper of each volume bears bookplate of Joel Cheney Wells designed by Elisha Brown Bird and signed: P.C.B. S.L.S.Sd, 1929 and E.B. Bird. This plate is not included in Truesdell's E. B. Bird: His Book Plates (Boston: Chas. E. Goodspeed, 1904). Joel Cheney Wells (1874-1960) held several patents related to opthamology and founded the AO Research laboratory of the American Optical Company in Southbridge, Mass. He was also a cofounder, with his brothers, of Old Sturbridge Village. In Near Fine Condition: front joints very slightly rubbed; clean and bright. A very attractive set.
