Three quarter leather and cloth, titles stamped in gold on the spine, raised bands, marbled endpapers, [6], 698 pp., frontis., illustrated, maps, chapter notes. Herd 1959 says "Scarce." "The author, a Frenchman, visited the United States in 1890. He analyzes American civilization and gives impression of the people and customs encountered on the western ranches and in western towns and cities." An all-encompassing account of American life and culture, through the eyes of a visitor. Includes information on ranching, petroleum, westward emigration, agriculture, manufacturing, social mores, politics, etc. Light cosmetic restoration to spine ends and corners, else a very good copy.
