Campbell returned from Vietnam in 1972 after serving as Battalion Commander of the 90th Replacement Battalion. He witnessed first-hand the drug problems that affected the troops, and the Army's attempt to detoxify those who had become addicted. Yet, this topic was almost completely omitted in the books he read and the documentaries he watched. He wondered, "Didn't they know? Didn't they care?" For a solid year his whole world had been drugs, FRAT machines, and attempted detoxification of troops with a habit. This story needed to be told
