Letters studied Classics and English at the University of Sydney (BA, 1918; MA, 1921; LL B, 1926) graduating with first-class honours in Latin.
He practiced as a barrister in New South Wales from 1927 to 1937
In 1938 he was appointed foundation lecturer in English and Latin at New England University College.
