London: Printed for Dan. Browne, and Lockyer Davis, 1753 A good copy of the 4th edition of Martin Martin's account of his visit to St Kilda in 1697 (first published in 1698). Martin Martin lived on Skye and was a gaelic speaker. He decided to visit and study the western isles of Scotland to record both the land and its culture and natural history. Although Martin's account was mocked by some, particularly because he was considered too believing of local tales, it was much read and reprinted. This copy is in a probably later 1800's half leather binding with marbled boards. The spine has blind stamped decoration and gilt compartments with leather title label to spine. It sound and clean with some rubbing at joints, edges and corners and a little scuffing. There is the armorial bookplate of Edward Herbert, Earl of Powis to the front pastedown, and some marking to the endpapers suggesting that a cover was stuck down over the book at some point. James Oliver's wrote a captivating account of his experiences of the impending disaster on the ship 'The Glide' in his book 'Wreck of the Glide'. The ship struck a reef on March 21, 1831, and dragged its anchor for 8 miles until it finally wrecked on the Fijian Island Vanua Levu. This book includes descriptions of life and manners at the Fiji Islands and their peoples.

This first edition of 'Wreck of the Glide' includes recollections of the Fijiis and Wallis Island and is expounded upon by Dix. Features an account of life and manners at the Fiji Islands.

1687 Travels of Chardin in PERSIA Middle East Iraq Turkey Iran Voyages French

A rare French edition of Jean Chardin's "Travels into Persia and the East Indies". This book is regarded as one of the finest works of early Western scholarship on Persia and the Near East. This printing was published at the same time as other French edition, all are considered first editions. In this book Chardin discusses his journeys from Constantinople to the Black Sea, Persia, and throughout the Middle East (Kashan, Iraq; Armenia, Crimea, and Georgia). The end of his journey took him through the Cape of Good Hope, on his way home.

Upon his return, he was considered quite a celebrity in London; though, according to Evelyn he was 'not inclined to talke wonders". He met with famous members of the Royal Society, all of whom took great interest in his voyage. He told them of his witnessing of Abbas II's coronation, and the jewels and fine ornaments he had seen.
