A fundamental and early work on Brazilian Jesuit Missions; one of the first Jesuit Priests to work in Brazil. 1617. Cologne. Johannes Kinchium. In 12vo (131 mm x 75 mm). 1 [blank] + 2 ff. + 427 [428] + 1 ff. + 1 [blank]. Contemporary or near contemporary vellum, ties as fragments, gently soiled. A fine copy, some leaves browned as expected.

Although printed the same year as the Lyon edition, Leclerc states that this is the second edition; it could also be a second issue. Father Anchieta (1534 – 1597) was a Canarian Jesuit Priest and writer; after short studies in Portugal, and being only 19 years old, he was selected to travel to the Jesuit missions in Brazil, accompanying Duarte da Costa. Before making shore they shipwrecked, but still Anchieta was able to make shore at Sao Vicente, which allowed him to have contact with the Tapuia Indians who were natives of the region. Furthermore, he is considered as one of the founders of Sao Paulo, in 1554, and Rio de Janeiro, in 1565 (after the defeat of the French settlers). His labor in the catechesis and conversion of the Indians into the Catholic faith –along with Nóbrega-, was crucial to the establishment of a colonial settlement in the country. The work is “based on the manuscript by Father Pedro Rodrigues, visiting Father to Angola and Brazil. This manuscript was unpublished at the time, but several copies were in circulation and served as the basis for all the biographies of Anchieta.” Borba de Moraes, 99. Rodriguez, 379. Leclerc, 1558.

(Sabin 118) A reissue of the 1588 edition.Jose de Acosta (September/October 1539 - February 15, 1600), was a Spanish 16th-century Jesuit missionary and naturalist in Latin America. Born at Medina del Campo in Spain, he became a novice in the Society of Jesus at the age of thirteen at the place of his birth. Four of his brothers successively joined the same order. Before leaving Spain, he was lecturer in theology at Ocana, and in April 1569, was sent to Lima, Peru, where the Jesuits had been established in the proceeding year. At Lima, Acosta again occupied the chair of theology; his fame as an orator had preceded him. In 1571 he went to Cuzco as a visitor of the college of the Jesuits then recently founded. First publication in a foreign language of any detailed information of the Lewis and Clark expedition, of especial interest to the French, since it was through lands they had so recently laid claim to. Perhaps more notable, however, is the presence of the map by J.B. Tardieu, "Carte Pour servir au Voyage des Capes. Lewis et Clarke..." which seems to be the first one published that mentions Lewis and Clark and locates parts of their route. It measures (9½x7¾"). Wheat notes that "Tardieu had no Lewis and Clark map to assist him, but he apparently had at hand Meriwether Lewis's brief letter-report to Jefferson, and he did his best to locate on his map at least a few of the Expedition's points of geographic interest.
