Prince Boris Borisovich Galitzin, or Golitsyn (1862-1916) invented the electromagnet seismograph. The German translation of 1914 is more common. The foundation of scientific seismometry. Prince Boris Borisovich Galitzin (1862-1916; also spelled Galitzine or Golitsyn) invented the electromagnet seismograph.. Golitzin (1862-1916),born in St. Petersburg, is principally remembered in two fields: physics and seismology. It was in the latter part of his career that he devoted his time to seismology and seismometry. In this period "he laid the foundations of scientific seismometry and developed an improved type of seismograph.... Through the efforts of Golitzin, Russian seismometry occupied a leading place in world science at that time; and his seismographs were the prototypes for new apparatus for the study of earthquakes and mechanical vibrations, and for seismic prospecting for useful minerals.... International recognition of his great services was expressed by his election as president of the International Seismic Association at its congress held at Manchester in 1911" (DSB). These lectures were published under the auspices of the Imperial Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg. This original edition is in Russian with only the contents pages translated into German. The original price was marked at 8 Mark or 3.60 Rubel which was quite expensive. A few leaves with a weak marginal crease, otherwise very good; clean, unmarked. DSB 5, pp. 461-462.
