London: H. Whitridge. Good with no dust jacket. 1748. First Edition. Leather. xxviii, 336 pp (i.e. 344, pp. 89-96 repeated) Folding map at frontis, 9 plates including 5 folding. The map includes Groenland (sic), Iceland, Hudsons Bay (A New Discovered Sea), Nova Scotia and Parts Unknown The plates include various animals including pelicans, owls, porcupines, sea unicorn, eagles, etc. and a number of scenes of Eskimaux and landscapes. The first part is a synopsis of twenty-three English voyages of discovery to the Northwest Passage. The second part describes the voyage of Captains Moor and Smith which proved the nonexistence of the Northwest Passage from Hudson's Bay,. Contains some of the earliest information on customs of the Inuit. ESTC T145975. In contemporary calf boards with gilt ruling, new calf spine with 5 raised bands, gilt in the compartments, black and gilt label, new end pastedowns. Good condition. Some minor occasional foxing, folding front map is delicate but intact, plates are clean and unmarked, small stains in the margins of the last two leaves, otherwise very nice. A good copy.; Copper plate; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 336 pages .
