Several small punctures to spine, spine toned, boards a bit soiled, hinges weakening, light stain to page fore edge. x, 364 pp. 8vo. Color frontispiece with captioned tissue guard, 1 color plate in text, black & white drawings by author. The second book in the popular series featuring Doctor John Dolittle, who can speak to animals. This was also the second book ever to win the Newbery Medal (1923). The series eventually included 12 novels, from Dolittle's perspective, one from an animal's perspective, and a day book with illustrations and excerpts from previous books. Original editions of some of Lofting's works -- including this one -- are textually different than modern editions, which have removed some racist terminology. "When his colleague Long Arrow disappears, Dr. Dolittle sets off with his assistant, Tommy Stubbins, his dog, Jip, and Polynesia the parrot on an adventurous voyage over tropical seas to floating Spidermonkey Island.

Sinopsis

The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle was the second of Hugh Lofting's Doctor Dolittle books to be published, coming out in 1922. It is nearly four times longer than its predecessor and the writing style is pitched at a more mature audience. The scope of the novel is vast; it is divided into six parts and the illustrations are also more sophisticated. It won the Newbery Medal for 1923. The original edition contains several derogatory terms for Africans that are removed from modern editions.
