With 152 etched plates, many double-page and fold-out, numbered 111-262.This volume includes a long section on Persepolis, with 27 panoramic views of the ruins -- pillars, facades with ornaments and reliefs, columns, tombs of the king of Persia, figures, etc. Other plates show views of China, Arabia, animals, plants, Balinese slaves, various settlements, a "savage man of the South," and much more.The author was a painter and explorer who traveled from 1701 to 1708 to Russia, Persia, India, Ceylon and elsewhere. His Persepolis sojourn came in 1704. At the end of this volume is appended a criticism of the work of Jean Chardin and Kempfer. Corners rubbed, loss of gilt to the spine. First edition of the work in this format and binding, and/or set or series. Size: Large Folio (bigger than A3). One volume of the 2-volume set. Text is in French. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact.
