A handsome set of the first edition of this comprehensive account. Atlas volume with 97 engravings on 66 leaves, including large map on two folding sheets, two full page maps and two folding maps. The maps include the region between Peking and Qingdao (Canton), map and plan of Macao, maps of the Philippines and of Manila Bay. The plates illustrate views, architecture of palaces and pagodas, street life, gardens, theater, costume, etc. Text deals with foreign trading companies, industry, canals, ships, roads, painting and sculpture, porcelain, festivals and customs and so on. Guignes, a French orientalist scholar and diplomat, was appointed French resident in China and Consul in Canton in 1784. John Harris (1633-1719) was an anglican priest and scientist, specialising in mathematics. He was admitted as an FRS in 1696. His written works were well-regarded and popular and Navigantium was published in 2 further enlarged editions. The 1st edition is relatively scarce and is sought after particularly for the first printings of the Moll maps. The bindings are in near fine clean condition with gilt-lined raised bands to the spine with gilt decoration in the compartments and title and volume labels. There is light scuffing. Internally new endpapers and blanks have been added. This set has been matched against the reference copy held by the Hathi Trust and matches it apart from a misplaced plate, a missing plate, a small misbound section in the appendix and a misplaced map…

Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.

Octavo, pp xii, 310, illustrated (including two chromolithographs by Keulemans), a rather poor copy, lacking the folding map, an ex-Boots library copy in red library cloth, a bit used and weak internally with cracked hinges (through front and rear hinges tight and strong), some plates a little frayed, a small stamp on the front endpaper and a library label on the rear, the cloth rather worn, marked on the upper cover, the spine torn. A useful working copy. [Andre was an explorer and collector of natural history specimens . He wrote a glossary of common and scientific names of plants and animals and put together a collection of 1800 bird skins which are held at Tring. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a Fellow of the Zoological Society. He travelled largely in Venezuala and Columbia and introduced the Anthurium plant to Trinidad & Tobago, 1915.]. Signed by Author. First English edition. Cloth. Fair.
