Cropped margins, View of the Lock at Delfshaven, a borough of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. This is an example of a "vue d'optique" or perspective view, a popular print from the second half of the 18th century, designed to be projected with a viewing device (a zograscope or perspective glass) which enhanced the illusion of depth and perspective, providing something of a 3D effect. There is a most interesting and thorough article by C.J. Kaldenbach "Perspective Views which was originally published in Print Quarterly (June 1985) which can be accessed on the web. .
