Presentation Copy, inscribed on the dedication page: "Richard White Esq., of the Montreal Gazette from the Author / 27 July, 1884." Richard Smeaton White [1865 -1936] was a Canadian newspaper publisher & political figure. He sat for Inkerman division in the Senate of Canada as a Conservative from 1917 to 1936. He was publisher of the Montreal Gazette.
