Known as key figure in early avant-garde cinema, Walter Ruttmann was a pioneer of experimental animation and the creative force behind one of the silent era's most celebrated montage films, Berlin: Symphony of a Great City (1927).
Yet even as he was making experimental films, Ruttmann also primarily worked in advertising -and he produced industrial films, medical films, and, more notoriously, Nazi propaganda films.
This publication is the first English language study of Ruttmann, revealing his commercial, industrial, and propaganda work.
At the time of publication, Michael Cowan was an Associate Professor of German Studies and World Cinema at McGill University.
This book won the Willy Haas Award 2014 for its outstanding contribution to the study of German cinema.
Rare copy in excellent condition and suitable for any personal or academic library on the study of historical cinema.
