This is a study of the question of idolatry in the religious and political controversy of the Reformation; it provides a survey of the development of the Reformed attitude toward idolatry from Erasmus through Calvin; its central thesis is that Calvin, in defending the heritage of the Reformed attitude toward idolatry, forged a new theological metaphysics in which the boundaries between the spiritual and the material were more clearly drawn, and that this reaffirmation of the centrality of spiritual worship provided the ideological foundation for much of the social and political unrest that accompanied the spread of Calvinism (gray pictorial cover with black & white lettering, slight reading crease on front; otherwise a bright, clean, tight copy; in stock & available for immediate shipment)
