Secure binding, hinges secure, corners and spine ends show little wear. Previous owner's name on front paste down in black ink. Pages lightly and evenly age toned, but clean and unmarked otherwise. Capek's satirical sci fi classic concerns the discovery, in the Indian Ocean, of a race of intelligent newts, who are initially enslaved and exploited. When they acquire human knowledge and rebel against their tormentors, a global war ensues. The book was unsurprisingly blacklisted in Nazi Germany in 1940 and Nazi-occupied Norway in 1941. It has since been translated into numerous languages, and its influence remains evident, nearly a century after its original publication. Uncommon in this edition, even without the dust jacket. .
