Original blue cloth, marbled edges, with gilt design on front cover, 460 pages, fold out map laid in, frontis, illustrations, minor wear to edges, small spot on rear cover, sticker residue on spine. This copy signed by William Preble Hall on the front paste-down. Hall achieved the rank of Brigadier General during his service with the army. He graduated West Point with the class of 1868. His first assignment was with the 19th Infantry. He then served in the 5th Cavalry, the unit in which he was awarded the Medal of Honor. He served principally on Western Frontier duty until the Spanish-American War. Big Horn and Yellowstone Expedition, June 5 to Nov. 2, 1876, being engaged in the Action on Indian Creek, Wy., July 17, 1876, and Combat of Slim Buttes, Dak., Sep. 9 10, 1876, Dec. 19, 1878, to Mar. 19, 1879; and on frontier duty at Ft. D. A. Russell, Wy., to May 1, 1880, It was during a battle with hostile Indians while in command of a reconnoitering party near a camp on the White River (Colorado), October 28, 1879, that he was cited for the Medal of Honor. "For most distinguished gallantry in action near camp on White River, Colo., Oct. 29, 1879. This officer, then a First Lieutenant, 5th U. S. Cavalry, in command of a reconnoitering party of three men, and while going to the rescue of a brother officer who had been attacked by Indians, was himself attacked by about thirty-five warriors. During the engagement he several times exposed himself in order to draw the fire of his assailants and locate their position so that his small party could reply with some effect.
