First edition. 8vo. 62, (2) pp. Publisher's boards, inscribed by Levi on the front free endpaper "John with love..." with a doodle of a pear underneath, the book label of the recipient (John Johnson) to the front pastedown, loosely inserted is a postcard inscribed by Levi to Johnson wishing him a happy Christmas with a doodle of budding rose underneath plus a printed invitation to Levi's ordination as a priest. Covers with light wear and marking, else very good. Levi had a long career as an academic, critic and writer. The son of a Jewish man who converted to Catholicism, Levi's career also took in a stint as a Jesuit priest - the ordination taking place in 1964. He left the priesthood to marry Deirdre Craig, widow of Cyril Connolly.
