[August], [8.25x5.75in], 318 pp., frontispiece image of Lindbergh and plane, 23 plates with 47 images; Dark blue cloth covers with gilt lettering on front and spine, gilt lines at top and bottom of front with illustration of "Spirit of St. Louis" plane on front, light blue pictorial patterned end papers of repeat illustrations of plane, all edges trimmed; No dust jacket or slipcase as issued; Some shelf wear of soiling and rubbing to edges, corners and surfaces, small splits and fraying to top and bottom of spine; spine slightly darken with fainted gilt, front and back hinges loose, but holding; ink signature of prior owner, Virginia Marsden Black, on front end paper and San Francisco "The White House" bookseller label on back end paper. Charles Augustus Lindbergh (1902-1974) was a US air mail pilot that gained fame as the first to fly alone nonstop from New York to Paris in 1927. This was a great achievement in the technology and other advances in aircraft design and won for Linbergh the Orteig Prize of $25,000 ($360,000 equivalent).

This event propelled him to celebrity. Also a well know inventor, explorer and environmentalist. In the late 1930's and prior to the US entry into the World War, he was a spokesman for the American First Committee that promoted nonintervention and antiwar organization that was also pro-german.
