First serialized in the New York Weekly, June 30 through September 15, 1873. Publisher taken from advertisement facing title page. "The imprint of the American News Co. on the spine is a mystery, for it is evident that Carleton published the book through an arrangement with Street & Smith" (BENNETT 192).
