The authorship of this volume is attributed to Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793 – 1864), American geographer, geologist, and ethnologist, noted for his early studies of Native American cultures. His wife was Jane Johnston, daughter of a prominent Scotch-Irish fur trader and an Ojibwa mother; Jane taught her husband the Ojibwe language and much about her mother's culture. This book was originally issued 1844-45, in eight numbers with paper covers bearing the title Onéota, or The red race of America.
