"But since modern Japanese history is largely a history of the impact of Occidental culture upon a Are Eastern country, the author has found it desirable to deal first with the general problem of European influences on Asia, and against that background to treat of Japan as a particular case stop his book, therefore, deals first on a broad lines with European intercourse with India, Southeast Asia, and China, and in detail with the native culture of Japan as it has been affected by her foreign relations, beginning with the arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th century and ending with the China war of 1895." – From the front fold over panel blurb.
