First American edition. The author travelled all over the eastern United States as far as the Mississippi Valley, including a trip by land from Washington to New Orleans via Georgia, and return by steamboat. Howes calls this "judicious commentary based on extensive travels." Contains a long discussion of California, with a map of that state as well as New Mexico and Arizona. HOWES M117.
