First Edition (1953), unstated, in accordance with Pantheon's customary practice at the time of publication. Very Near Fine in Very Good+ DJ: The Book shows a touch of shelving wear to the lower extremities extremities; the expected very light tanning to the text pages due to aging; else flawless; the binding is square and secure; the text is clean. Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of any underlining, hi-lighting or marginalia or marks in the text. Free of ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, or labels. A handsome, nearly-new copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing the mildest wear and a minor, unobtrusive cosmetic imperfection. Bright and clean. Corners sharp. Very close to "As New". The DJ shows faint toning to the white background field of the rear panel; the price has been clipped; mylar-protected. No longer 'As New', but remains clean, bright, attractive. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. (8.2 x 5.5 x 0.75 inches). 192 pages. Language: English. Weight: 11 ounces. Hardback with DJ. Walter Lowrie (1868 1959) was a Kierkegaardian theologian and translator. From 1907 until 1930, Lowrie was rector of St Paul's American Church in Rome. When he retired in 1930, he returned to Princeton and began what he called an "itinerant ministry." He published 39 books and numerous articles, including The Short Story of Jesus (1943) and Kierkegaard (1938). Lowrie studied and translated the works of Søren Kierkegaard, the Danish nineteenth-century theologian. From 1939 until 1945, he published twelve volumes of Kierkegaard translations and worked very closely with fellow Kierkegaard translator David F. Swenson, who was working from the University of Minnesota. He was awarded the Knight Cross of the Order of Dannebrog in 1947, 'As an appreciation of his extensive efforts to spread the knowledge of the intellectual production of Søren Kierkegaard in the Anglo-Saxon world and, thereby, promoting the general understanding of Danish spiritual life'.
