Narrator, anthropologist, historian, naturalist and writer George Bird Grinnell's (1849 - 1938) says "the incidents of this simple story are true". It is the story of the Indian boy Wikis who has no father to teach him, and how his uncle steps in to instruct him in the ways of hunting, war, and tribal wisdom. The boy Wilkis and his people are not further identified, but it is likely they were Northern Cheyennes.
