Fine, 1921 gift inscription front free endpaper. A new AEF World War I recruit tells of how his mother reacted when hearing that he was leaving college and enlisting. He goes back home for 24 hours before heading off to camp; Mother and the rest of the family put on cheerful, brave faces. (Mother had gotten her nickname because "...she always could whistle like a blackbird.").
