What he observed on that trip formed the basis of White-Jacket , a success both as a story and as an exposee of certain naval practices of which the public was only dimly aware. The treatment meted out to the white men on the man-of-war is the same was that experienced by black slaves in every state of the USA. His desire to expose and to reform a barbaric system which reflected badly on the Declaration of Independence, runs an unspoken connection. With hindsight, Melville's novel is double-edged. Hard to find in paperback.* This is a NEAR VG++ text copy of the 1st. /1st. imp. thus. with minor age and wear reducing it to VG+.* Tanner, Tony
