Very Good Condition/Very Good. 1.2 kg; 304 pp., introduction by author, notes, bibliography,sources of illustrations, index illustrated endpapers, showing an idealised vision of an afternoon tea. Illustrated title page. Text illustrated with copious black and white illustrations, pictures, advertisements and drawings from Victorian age in Australia. Some of the illustrations are double page. Grey boards showing an illustration of convicts, with white writing on spine. Shelf wear to the bottom edges of book, light foxing to the top edge. Illustrated dustwrapper, based on J. B. Henderson's painting "Eureka Stockade Riot, Ballarat, 1854", with red, blue and grey writing on the front panel and spine. Dustwrapper slightly rubbed on the top edge, with a 0.5 inch split at the top right-hand side of the rear panel, and fading on the spine. "This is the first of the projected series of three volumes surveying what remains from Australia's Victorian Age of relevance to our present-day society. The book concentrates lightly on immigration of people of widely differing types -- convicts, military men, merchants, squatters, gold-seekers and coloured immigrants.". The book then describes how this amalgamation of people were shaken down into two distinct groups, the exploited and the exploiters. Size: 4to 9¾" - 12" tall.
