New York, Charles Scribner, 1862, First edition. . original cloth with gilt vignette and gilt spine title lettering faded, rear joint torn, spine ends chipped, spine with small hole repaired, interior is clean, unmarked and near fine in good cover. . 8vo [20.5 x 13.5 cm]; x, 502 pp, 34 illustrations including 10 plates including frontis (mostly tinted lithographs, some wood engraved), other illustrations including full-page (complete). . The author, who mentions his meeting with Charles Waterton in England where he received his education, travelled widely in Venezuela, describing nature, the peoples, customs, etc. The plates include a jaguar, view of Caracas, scenes with horses, etc. Welch 257 (citing the 2nd edition). Sabin 58140. There were various later printings, some under different titles, but the later editions had fewer or no plates. A picture of this book is available on request by email.
