William Crotch was known as the musical phenomenon of Norwich, he gave public organ recitals at the age of two and a half and played before the king at Three. He had played at every major town in England and Scotland by the time he was seven. He was regarded as England's leading composer and for fifty years was Professor of Music at Oxford, yet today he is almost completely unknown. Jonathan Rennert himself an accomplished organist gave his first broadcast recital at the age of nineteen in Westminster Cathedral.
