Sobre este artículo

London England: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1974. Hardback. First Edition. Slight foxing to end inside covers. Shelf wear and a couple of small tears to edge of D/J. Of all castles in the world Windsor Castle offer the most familiar image, in outline and roofscape - and now, in the age of air-travel, its whole plan, courts and towers and terraces, stand revealed. It is unique as fulfilling the functions for which it was created: residence of the sovereign, visible embodiment of church and state, with St. George's Chapel as the home of the Order of the Garter. This book tells the story in the perspective of this history of the nation, of which it offers an epitome. It ranges from the Norman kings who created it to the abdication of Edward VIII in our time. The Castle has been the scene of many historic events: King John's residence there while negotiating Magna Carta in the meadows below at Runnymede; the arrest of Sir Walter Ralegh on the Terrace; the Army debates and decisions to bring Charles I to trial at the end of the Civil War. The Castle has had its romances too, King James I of Scotland as a prisoner falling in love with Joan Beaufort; the fun and frolics of the Restoration, when Charles II laid out the Grand Avenue and Prince Rupert lived in the Round Tower. If the book has a hero it is George IV, who reconstructed the Castle as we see it today and greatly added to its treasures. With approximately 80 black-and-white and 16 colour illustrations. 254 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.) . First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Fair. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Hardback.
