Contemporary full red grained morocco, spine with gilt rules, lettering and embellishment. Boards with double gilt border rules, foliar and floral embellishment, edge tooling, inner foliar curlicues. All edges gilt, (gilding a little faded in places), green silk ribbon bookmark. Small area of surface loss to lower board (see photo). Corner tips lightly rubbed. Occasional light spotting, mainly to free endpapers. Text and plates crisp and bright.Guy Toussaint Julien Carron (1760-1821) born in Rennes. Educator, writer and philanthropist who founded a number of social and educational institutions: schools, libraries and pharmacies while in exile in England. Deported to Jersey (1792-1796), on the Bourbon Restoration in 1814, Carron returned to France and became head of the Institut de Marie - Thérèse.

Number 708. 1933 1st edition, 2nd printing (with 1928 copyright date and 3-title ad at the back of the book); Whitman Publishing Company; Racine, Wisconsin. Illustrated throughout. This title has the distinction of being the second Big Little Book ever published. The book is a reprint of the daily comic strip that appeared in the New York Daily News newspaper from October 1, 1931 to August 31, 1932. Scarce in any condition.Condition:Soiling/staining to the front cover; the spine has a stain at the left edge; small, light stain at the top-right corner of the back cover; the left and right edges of the bottom of the spine have chipped off. The top-right corner of the front cover is worn. Tight binding with no cracks. Page 234 is present but detached, and the top edge has torn off. Bound in orange cloth boards with title on front cover. Signed and numbered by the artist. This is the miniature version of Emeritz's large format edition of "Hand-Carved Alpha-Bet". As with the larger version the miniature alphabet book was printed with letters that were hand carved in wood by the artist. Each letter is a capital letter printed in orange.
