Chicago : Church and Goodman, 1866. First edition/printing. Size is thick octavo (8vo), 9.375"/24cm h, 3.25" thick. Bound in publisher's green sheep, patterning debossed to boards/spine with gilding to latter. Marbled edges. Marbled endpapers. Unpaginated front matter; [i-iii], iv-xxi, [xxii], [17] (sic), 18-1144. 26 listed heavier sheets w/portraits, unpaginated, faced with tissue guards; all confirmed present but for that of General Ruger, whose portrait does not face p. 977 as claimed - we see no evidence of subsequent removal of the sheet, possibly a printer's error. Author's preface; list of illus; table of contents; Regimental index; Intro; Part I (Antecedent of Regimental History - IX chaps); Part II (Eastern Department - Earlier History . From Sumter to Gettysburg. - XIV chaps); Part III (Western Department - Earlier History. From Sumter to Vicksburg. - XV chaps); Part IV (Western Department - Later History. From Vicksburg to Atlanta and Nashville. - XIII chaps); Part V (Eastern Department - Later History . From Gettysburg and Atlanta to Richmond. - IX chaps). Ninth chapter is Roll/Names of the Dead, by unit/cause/rank/last name. Appendix (the Chicago Conspiracy); Analytical Index. Condition notes: a handsome and collectible but worn copy. Sheep/roan-covered boards detached; the front board was at some point reattached with black cloth tape, under spine covering, but over board. Heavy wear to boards with loss of material, especially at corners/edges, rubbing/scuffing; loss of spine covering at head and tail, with bands exposed and worn. Loss of brightness to gilt. Moisture staining, soiling, loss of brightness to marbled edges. Interior generally tanned, with foxing (at times heavy) noticeable especially to extremities, portrait/tissue pages. Moisture staining at head and tail edges common; no page sticking observed. Penciled names to verso front flyleaf and recto frontispiece, with "Compliments of..." and date to latter; else, occasional penciled marginalia. This is a large, heavy volume which may require additional shipping; we encourage you to inquire before purchasing. An important work issued soon after the end of the war. We personally inspect every book we offer.
