Sobre este artículo

Knopf, 2014. First edition. Hardback. Fine/fine. Fine (rem. dot), unread copy in equally fine dust jacket. First edition (stated), first printing. Hardcover. 237 pp. with index, bibliography. Elizabeth Patterson Bonapatrte was renowned as the most beautiful woman of 19th century Baltimore. Through her 1803 marriage to Jerome Bonaparte, the youngest brother of Napoleon Bonaparte, she became inextricably bound to the diplomatic and political histories of the United States, France, and England. Napoloeon disapproved of his brother's marriage to "that American girl", and threatened to cut Jerome off from all waelth and power, so Jerome hastily ended the marriage, married another woman )of Napoleon's choice) and was made king of Westphalia. Betsy fled to England, gave birth to a son, Jerome's namesake, and was embraced by the British press. When the naive, headstrong American girl returned to Baltimore, she was courted by many, indifferent to all, and initiated a dangerous game of politics---a battle for a pension from Napoleon. It was a battle she won and she received her penison form the French government until Napoleon's exile.
