New York: H. W. Derby, 1861. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Frank Mildmay; or, The Naval Officer Jacob Faithful; or, The Adventures of a Waterman The King's Own Mr. Midshipman Easy Newton Forster; or, The Merchant Service The Pacha of Many Tales Percival Keene Peter Simple The Phantom Ship Snarlyyow; or, The Dog Fiend All volumes are uniformly three quarter bound in brown calf over marbled paper, five raised bands on spine with brown and red title labels and small decorative devices, marbled edges and endpapers, 7 1/2 x 5 inches, each volume has a different tissue-guarded engraved frontis illustration. The books range in condition, some with only light wear while others show heavier wear, leather is scuffed and worn at edges, boards are rubbed and worn, one volume has a tape removal injury to rear edge, most have unbroken internal hinges but a couple are starting to crack and Peter Simple is separated at the rear hinge, a couple have previous owner's names written in front endpaper and one has a little portrait drawn in pencil, Naval Officer has one badly torn page, otherwise all volumes are generally clean and unmarked except for occasional age spots or foxing, bindings on many are tender but all are intact. Before C. S. Forester and Patrick O'Brian there was Captain Frederick Marryatt. He was a member of the Royal Navy, and a friend of Charles Dickens. Marryatt pioneered the genre we know today as nautical fiction, basing much of his writing on his life in the navy. In addition to writing of life at sea, his novels were also concerned with family struggles and society. Counted among his fans were Mark Twain and Joseph Conrad. Even with its flaws, this is a beautiful set. Collected works of Marryatt have become difficult to find, especially in such lovely bindings. The books are quite striking together on a shelf. Large heavy set will require additional postage.

1882 Ingoldsby Legends Occult Ghosts Devils Illustrated Cruikshank Abracadabra

"ABRACADABRA!"

A beautiful and attractive 1882 printing of the famous "Ingoldsby Legends." This collection of myths, ghost stories, and poetry was written by R.H. Barham, who is better known by his penname, Thomas Ingoldsby.

These legends were extremely popular from their inception in 1837. While this collection is less popular today than it was in the 19th-century, it does include aspects that are still recognizable – the magic command "Abracadabra" and a version of the children's song Bingo! Other selections in this complete series include:
·
The Black Mousquetaire
·
Merchant of Venice
·
Nell Cook
·
Aunt Fanny
·
Dead Drummer
·
Babes in the Wood
·
Raising the Devil
·
Of the Old Woman Clothed in Grey
·
Smuggler's Leap

London: Osgood, McIlvaine & Co., 1894. First edition. Hardcover. Good +. 8vo, complete in 3 volumes. Original tan cloth boards with blue - green titles and decoration on front. Corners bumped and some minor edge wear. Some cracking of inner hinges, slightly cocked. Generally good + and nice & clean inside. This was published in lower numbers than the more common illustrated edition. Stated fourth edition inside, but this publisher (like others in Victorian Britain) often stamped later edition numbers on books to make it seem like the books were in high demand and selling out quickly. Wildly popular in Victorian times, the novel that introduced Svengali to the popular consciousness. Scarce.

1862 Japanese Shaka Hassou Buddha Gods Demons Samurai Illustrated Mantei Oga

A rare, 19th-century Japanese woodblock print of 'Shaka Hassou Yamato Bunko." "Shaka Hassou Yamato Bunko" is a biography of Buddha written by Mantei Oga and illustrated by Ichiyousai Toyokuni. Buddhism originated in Northern India, or present-day Nepal where the historical Buddha (Prince Siddhartha, Gautama Buddha), was born and lived. When Buddhism arrived in Japan, Siddhartha became known in Japan as Shaka or Shakamuni. Stories of Shaka's life were commonly told through selecting eight events to represent his life. This 'Shaka Hassou,' was aimed at the general populace, using the "eight phases" as a device to teach the important points of Shaka's life as well as a means of entertainment.
This rare 1862 edition is written in the typical handwritten column format with illustrations of weapons, battles, animals, samurai, courtesans, gods, skeletal demons, and more!
