Folio leather-spined embossed cloth gilt on bevelled boards (rebacked tips slightly worn spine gilt darkened & dulled) All Edges Gilt. Unique gilt and illuminated chromoliths inserted into sunken card mounts back to back. Double pages except for the final plate which is printed on the front (recto) only. Slight foxing to mounts but clean and lovely. *A lavish production in high Victorian style with central texts with large illuminated first capital letter and other ornaments surrounded by decorative frame. A wide shaped border incorporating a pictorial miniature then decorates the page with floral emblems of vines and trellises in a stunning background of colors. *Based on the idea of a mediaeval illuminated page displaying the virtuosity of Victorian chromo-lithography as beautifully executed by Day & Son. Quite difficult to find, this is a stunning early gift book.

Published at The Hampshire House Workshops, Hampshire Hog Lane, Hammersmith, London. 1915. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (7.5 x 5.2 inches). Illustrated with 12 wood engravings. One of 1500 copies. Inscribed by Gill on the front free endpaper "Eric Gill for H. Davis, 22.3.28" A very good copy in original grey canvas spine, lettered in black, with red paper covered boards with black lettering and illustration to the front board. Some loss to the paper on the boards, affecting 7 letters of the address at the bottom. Spine with just a little darkening. Overall a very good copy. Uncommon inscribed by Gill. --Evan Gill. 1914 Peking Beijing CHINA Memoirs Court Buddha Ming Forbidden City Illustrated

John Bland and Edmund Backhouse were already famous for their book 'China Under the Empress Dowager' when they wrote their history of the rulers of China - 'Annals and Memoirs of the Court of Peking.' This chronicle begins at the fall of the Mongol Empire, covering the Ming & Manchu dynasties, Li Tzu-Ch'eng's rebellion, the fall of Peking, the Mings at Nanking, Tao Kukang and the impact of the West, memoirs of the Boxer Year in 1900, and information on Buddha, laws and the forbidden city.
This 1914 edition includes 25 full-page black and white photogravure engravings.

Publishing cover and title page of the work of D. I. Mitrokhin. The situation of war always needs a simplified image of reality for propaganda purposes. This book is the first study on military prints, as a separate genre of "Russian folk pictures" during the First World War. The illustrations placed in this book are created in the XVIII - early XX centuries and present the history of lithographed military historical prints.
Good condition. Missing corner (5x10 cm) of avantitle, otherwise good.

Finely bound in original publishers delux full vellum binding with spine and front board fully decorated and lettered in gilt. Decorative endpapers. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. A fine copy of this beautiful edition.:

John Major, London.,1824. SECOND MAJOR EDITION. Illustrated with 14 copper engraved plates and several woodcuts throughout the text. Two small patches of browning affecting the top outer corner of ten leaves, otherwise a very good copy in fine nineteenth century binding by Thomson of Exeter, with binders ticket on front paste down. Full tan calf, raised bands, compartments fully gilt. Red title label, gilt. Boards with double blind ruled and one gilt ruled borders. Marbled endpapers. School prize plate on front paste down shows that this copy was given as a prize in January 1842. Previous owners name(dated 1881) and ink name stamp on blank endpapers. Front hinge neatly repaired. Some minor rubbing to edges but generally a very good copy in an attractive nineteenth century binding.:

Each plate with the title printed below the border. 95 line illustrations throughout, some full page. Previous owners neat name on front blank endpaper otherwise a fine copy in original burgundy cloth with gilt illustrations and lettering to front board and spine. Front board with quadruple ruled black borders, spine ruled in gilt. In the scarce original publshers dustwrapper with colour illustration mounted onto the front panel, below black lettering and four line border. Flaps and other panels lettered in black. Original printed price (15/-) on spine has been blacked out neatly. Aside from a couple of tiny chips to the wrapper this is a beautiful fine example of this well produced edition. Scarce in this condition.:

Each tipped in and with a printed paper guard. Line drawings on each Act title page. A tight, crisp copy in publishers green cloth with bright gilt lettering to the spine. Front board lettered and elaborately illustrated in gilt. Plain white endpapers. Minor fading to the green cloth on the spine and small faint mark to the very bottom of the rear board but overall a very good, bright copy of this beautiful book.

Text and images were printed using photopolymer plates and reduction linoleum blocks. Fonts are Optima Bold and Gill Sans Light. Handbound in quarter-cloth with cover paper of handmade walnut dyed flax. 3.5 x 3.5" illustration inset of quilted papers, which were designed with the artist's mother.
