Edinburgh: Archibald Constable & Co., 1822. 1822-1825. A magnificent 36 volume set uniformly bound in contemporary full red morroco. (The Historical Romances 6 Vols., 1822.; Novels and Romances 7 Vols., 1824.; Portraits af The Novels, Tales and Romances 1 Vol., 1824; Poetical Works 10 Vols., 1825; Novels and Tales 12 Vols. 1822). Engraved title pages and plates, - Proofs on India Paper to the Portraits and Poetical Works vols.; The Portraits volume consists of 32 portraits on India Paper, engraved title page also on India Paper and two rather fine etchings of Abbotsford - the seat of Sir Walter Scott - see note at end regarding the portrait volume. Royal 8vo- leaf size 210 x 130mm with generous margins). Gilt stamped lettering and decoration to the spines, gilt ruled borders to the borders with extensive inner dentelles. All edges extravagantly gilt. Bindings generally very good, a little rubbed more so to joints and edges, but all very strong, a few volumes with small scuff marks and the odd knocked corners, spines slightly faded. Contents good and tight, engraved title pages and plates with some foxing - to a greater or lesser extent, those on India paper are generally less foxed, the letterpress pages mostly clean with just occasional spotting. A handsome set, of what is a very early collection of Scott's works. (Note regarding the portrait volume - contents page reads "Illustrations of the Novels and Tales of the Author of Waverley. A SERIES OF PORTRAITS OF EMINENT HISTORICAL CHARACTERS introduced in those works, Accompanied with Biographical Notices. The portraits are engraved in the most highly finished manner by Mr. Robert Cooper, from Drawings made expressly for the work by Messrs, Thurston, Unwins, and Watson, after the most authentic originals. The work is complete in eight parts, each part containing four portraits and lives. For the convenience of binding them as a separate volume, an Engraved Title from an original design by Mr. George Cruikshank is given in the eighth number..." Following this is a pricing schedule. It is interesting to note that Proofs on India paper are one of the most expensive formats, which underlines the quality of this set.). Early Edition. Full Leather. Very Good. Royal 8vo. Book.

London: Printed for J. Walker, 1788. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 12mo. A very good four volume set in contemporary, full tree calf binding with double lettering pieces in red and green. Complete pp. [iii]-vii, [1] 222; [2], 206; [2], 238 & [2], 198. No half-titles which may or may not be wanting, but the pagination for the prelims to vol. I might suggest that one is required? Very good bindings with a little rubbing, a couple of volumes slightly chipped to the head/tail of the spines, corners lightly bruised. Contents clean and tight, manuscript (Greek?) initials to title pages dated 1788 otherwise unmarked, no foxing, paper crisp. A very good set. A Rare Eighteenth Century Novel. We have managed to located just one other copy at auction in the last thirty years and that at Sotheby's sale of July 21, 1993, where it made £1,000 on the hammer, though seemingly not such a nice copy. Descripción:
v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
