First Edition. Original Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6? - 7? tall.

Black (dark green?) cloth with gilt-stamped spine title "Hill's Poems" and gilt-stamped center-medallion harp on both boards; blind-stamped decoration on both boards. Pale yellow endpapers. Includes Errata slip tipped in following Contents. Former owner's name on front fixed endpaper: A.E. Phillips. Dedicated to Ebenezer Bailey, Esq. of Boston. The author, George Hill (1796-1871) graduated from Yale in 1816 and taught mathematics for the Navy beginning in 1827. His experience in the Mediterranean with the Navy inspired his poem The Ruins of Athens, which was published anonymously in 1831. This is the first appearance of the other poems in this volume. Scarce. In Good- Condition: cover is soiled with several small ink spots; ends of spine and corners rubbed; ends of spine fraying; endpapers are discolored; foxing throughout; a few leaves are partially detached but volume is complete.

First edition, octavo; [24],170,[2]pp. In contemporary full leather (a little worn), double gilt fillet to board margins, five raised spine bands, gilt lettered labels to second and third compartments, hairline split to head and foot of front hinge (with hinge remaining firmly secure), opening and closing leaves stained by turn ins, old ink ownership name to head of title page, otherwise a clean copy with attractive woodcut headpieces and capitals. The title page declares this volume's price as 3s 6d., adding that two volumes of Boileau's non-posthumous works may be had for 12s. This example was bound up as a companion to these two volumes and though it bears a "vol.3"spine label, is nevertheless a separate work. And in an unusual collaboration across artisitic boundaries Alasdair Gray has produced 8 poems written from August 2-5, 1998 on eight series of prints by the artist. A wonderful book and this copy is one of an unspecified but limited number signed in pencil by both the artist and the poet, at the front endpaper. Book and dustjacket both in superb condition, presents as a like-new copy.

A rare early issue of this seminal 1960s little magazine, entirely devoted to work by John Wieners. An unmarked copy (aside from stray doodle to front leaf), folder shadowing to front leaf (which has edge folds), a little marginal staining. (First two leaves are most worn.)

Portrait frontis engravings showing Browning as a young man (dated 1835) opposite the title page of volume 1, and as an old man (1881) for volume 2. Finely bound in contemporary full burgundy calf bindings. Spines with raised bands, each with gilt ruling. Compartments with double ruled and decorated in gilt. Twin tan morocco labels, gilt. Boards with double ruled borders with floral decorations to the corners. Front boards both have circular gilt stamp of Saint Catherine's School, Bramley, Guildford, to the centre. Decorative blind floral borders to the inner boards. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. School prize labels, dated 1900, to the front pastedown endpapers in each volume. Some minor foxing to the frontispieces and the tissue guards opposite them. Blank white prelim pages are more heavily foxed but the text pages are clean throughout. Over 200 fables in verse demonstrating universal moral truths, offered for purposes of restoring honesty, responsibility, integrity, and charity to Colombian society,which distinguished Columbian national poet Rafel Jose Rafael de Pombo y Rebolledo (1833-1912) viewed as being in a disreputable state at the time. All entries either authored or personally collected and translated into Spanish by the author and first published here after the discovery of the lost manuscript after his death. Very Good, binding tight, sound and square, text clean, crisp, bright, no ownership signatures or any other markings of any kind, pages unopened. Text in Spanish. Quite rare.
