London: Longmans, Green, and Co, 1866. First Edition Thus. Leather bound. Near fine. The Works of Lord Macaulay, published in London in 1866 by Longmans, Green, and Co.. Octavo, [8 volumes]. Three-quarter leather, marbled paper boards. Title in gilt on spine with decorative gilt embellishments. Marbled endpapers and leaf ends. All eight volumes with light rubbing to covers, faint sunning to spines. Volume I with frontispiece portrait, torn half-title in Volume II, since repaired. A near fine example. Presented by students of Harrow School to Reverend H.W. Watson, with inscription on front flyleaf. Reverend Henry William Watson (1827-1903) was a scholar who attended King's College London and Trinity College Cambridge before working as the Mathematics Master at Harrow School from 1857-1865. Harrow, an all boys boarding school, is known for its number of accomplished alumni, including Lord Byron and Sir Winston Churchill. This copy was signed by 21 of Watson's sixth form students to commemorate his leaving Harrow.
