Rosanjin Kitaoji often said "Nothing should be discussed in a generalized manner". And, this is true of his art more than anything else. As a matter of fact, he among his contemporaries, is the one whose art is the most difficult to define. He was a versatile artist who mastered calligraphy, letter engraving, painting, pottery, cooking and architectural design. He achieved a high level and established his own artistic style in each field. His pottery was the greatest in number among his productions and is the most widely known. However the idea that he was just a potter is not right. He was originally a calligrapher and seal-engraver. Here in this book I am trying to trace his artistic life as faithfully as possible in the perspective of history.
