1. Published by Roberts Brothers, Boston, 1894. Rare true first edition with 1894 on title page. 194 pages. 4.75 x 7 inches. Pressed gold gilt designs to spine and front cover. Front cover letters to title and author in green. All page edges are gold gilt. Light rub and soil to white cloth. No cloth fraying. Inside very clean, bright and tight. Author's first published book. Whiting published 21 works within the following 17 years. Each of 5 chapters are titled and introduced by a full-page poem of a famous poet, with 5-6 subtitles per chapter. From an 1895 New York Times review, ""...thoughtful essays devoted to the engendering of human happiness, friendship. and the salvation of society. One chapter, entitled 'Exclusiveness and Inclusiveness,' is of singular excellence..."" Timeless advice.
