Illustrator: Peter Carmichael -- Photographer. 1.2 kg; 78 pages of text plus numerous (approximately 250) pages of photographic illustrations, acknowledgements, introduction by authors. Photographic endpapers. Illustrated title page, a map showing the Pacific Islands; map of Fiji, map of the Gilbert Islands, map of Ellice islands and map of Tonga. Covers are in a sepia toned tapa design. Illustrated dustwrapper, showing people being pulled along by a horse cart, with black writing on front panel and spine. Slight rubbing of the bottom edge of the dust jacket and a 0.5 inch tear at the top right of the rear panel. Priceclipping of the front fold over flap, and of the half title page top right-hand corner. No other damage to report. In 1968 the photographer, Peter Carmichael, spent months photographing the islands of Fiji, Tonga, Gilbert and Ellice, and captured the contrasts and tensions of life in these islands.
