The author originally inteended to deal primarily with Dutch elm disease and its consequences, but he came to the view that Dutch elm disease is merely one aspect of the appalling and seemingly irresistible global deforestration which poses so terrible a threat to life on this planet. Lamb not only pulls this argument together, he looks at deforestation in the wider contect of land usage, economics and history - and examines the likely outcome of further deforestation for agriculture, climate and for human and animal life. Nor does Lamb merely criticise; he outlines courses of action available to us now - within the local community, the country, and at an international lever. When dealing specifically with Dutch elm disease he proposes measures radically at variance with established and complacent policies, which could, if implemented now, prevent the cirtual elimination of the elm.
