First edition. Thomas Frere (1820-1900) was one of the foremost promoters of chess in the USA in the 19th century. He helped organize the 1st American Chess Congress in New York. He was a player in the minor tournament of that congress. He organized the first Brooklyn chess club. He was one of the organizers of the Manhattan Chess Club. He organized the Fifth American Chess Congress in 1880 and the Sixth American Chess Congress in 1886. He worked as a clerk at the Equitable Life Assurance Society of New York.Condition:Corners bumped, spine ends rubbed through, previous owner's name on front end paper, title soiled, Doodling in pencil to back free end paper else about very good.

This chess magazine first appeared as a quarterly and then monthly in the years 1921-32. It was published in Berlin and used as a vehicle for giving many master games and articles by such writers as Grunfeld, Tartakower, Tarrasch, Nimzowitsch, Reti and Spielman. Many of the great tournaments of the period appeared in supplements to the magazine. It died when Kagan himself died in 1932. Eight players were invited to participate, including two very strong masters: Aron Nimzowitsch from Denmark, and Akiba Rubinstein from Poland. They met with six German chess masters that included Jacques Mieses, Friedrich Sämisch, Oscar Antze, Hans Duhm, Hermann Von Gottschall, and Walther Von Holzhausen. Games were played from August 9th to the 18th. Nimzowitsch won with a near perfect score of 6½ of 7, edging out Rubinstein by half a point. The prizes were awarded to the players at the Hotel Luisenhof. A masterclass was first introduced in 1915. But it is only from 1922 that the title of Danish chess champion was introduced, this was the first year also players from Copenhagen joined. The Master Class for 1916 was contested by 8 players. It was won b P F Johner with a score of 5 and tied two through 4 by M Marchand, O. von Lowenborg and H Krause. 5th place was claimed by O Sevensson with 3 points. 6th place was a tie between Johs Giersing and G Nyholm. The last place was regulated to E Jacobson with 1 1/2.

Contains Sir William Jones' poem "Cassia: or The Game of Chess, A Poem"; based upon Pratt's "Studies of Chess". (Van der Linde: 613) 5th English edition.This was first published in London by Ogilvie in 1802 (2 volumes). First published in America in 1817 and reprinted in 1824. The name of the compiler has never been established. The miscellaneous collection of anecdotes, essays and poems at the end is not without interest. The openings and games are all in the numerical notation and no diagrams are given. Efim Bogoljubov scored first a full point ahead of Akiba Rubinstein whom scored 6 points. and Rudolf Spielmann, Carl Ahues and Ernst Grünfeld tied for third each with a score of 5.
