The Writings of George Washington

This is an early collection of "The Writings of GEORGE WASHINGTON" by Jared Sparks. The volumes are dated 1834-1837; Russell, Odiorne, and Metcalf, and Hilliard, Gray, and Co.; Boston. This collection contains 11 volumes of a 12 volume set (volume 7 is not included). The volumes contain numerous illustrations and maps. "Being His Correspondence, Addresses, Messages, and Other Papers, Official and Private, Selected and Published from the Original Manuscripts." With a Life of the Author and Notes. The volumes have a "Ridgefield Library" ink stamp with handwriting over it at the bottom of the front pastedowns; some front pastedowns also have "Gift of L.A. Welles" at the top. The contents are arranged as follows: VOLUME I (1837): Life of Washington. VOLUME II (1834): Part First - Comprising Official Letters Relating to the French War, and Private Letters before the American Revolution. VOLUME III (1834): Part Second - Comprising Correspondence and Miscellaneous Papers Relating to the American Revolution; an advertisement for the "Works of Benjamin Franklin" by Sparks has been tipped-in at the front. VOLUME IV (1834): Part Second (continued) - Comprising Correspondence and Miscellaneous Papers Relating to the American Revolution. VOLUME V (1834): Part Second (continued) - Comprising Correspondence and Miscellaneous Papers Relating to the American Revolution. VOLUME VI (1834): Part Second (continued) - Comprising Correspondence and Miscellaneous Papers Relating to the American Revolution. VOLUME VIII (1835): Part Second (continued) - Comprising Correspondence and Miscellaneous Papers Relating to the American Revolution. VOLUME IX (1835): Part Third - Comprising Correspondence from the Time of Resigning His Commission as Commander-in-Chief of the Army to that of His Inauguration as President. VOLUME X (1836): Part Fourth - Containing Correspondence Official and Private from the Beginning of His Presidency to the End of His Life. VOLUME XI (1836): Part Fourth (continued) - Containing Correspondence Official and Private from the Beginning of His Presidency to the End of His Life. VOLUME XII (1837): Part Fifth - Comprising Speeches and Messages to Congress, Proclamations, and Addresses. Condition: Some staining/foxing to the covers; consistent foxing to the pages throughout the volumes; worn cover corners. Vols 2, 5, 6, & 8-12 in Good condition - all are tightly bound w/firmly attached covers. VOL 1 - front cover up to contents page xxiv are detached; 5 instances of repair tape securing pages along the spine at the front, & 3 instances at the back (including back cover); tape over a few tears at the front. VOL 2 - wear along spine edges; last page & following 3 end papers & pastedown have a stain at upper-outer corner. VOL 3 - front cover shaky w/repair tape used along spine; large pieces missing at top/bottom edges of spine. VOL 4 - front cover attached but shaky; staining along top edge to a few pages at the front & back. VOL 5 - 1" tear at top of title page; stain at upper-inner corner to the first few pages; 2" tear at top-right edge of spine. VOL 6 - light stain at top edge of last few pages. VOL 10 & 11 - light stain at top page edges through the last quarter of the book. Overall the collection is in Fair condition.
